چکیده

A relationship between foE trends and geomagnetic activity long-term variations has been revealed for the first time. By analogy with earlier obtained results on the foF2 trends it is possible to speak about the geomagnetic control of the foE long-term trends as well. Periods of increasing geomagnetic activity correspond to negative foE trends, while these trends are positive for the decreasing phase of geomagnetic activity. This “natural” relationship breaks down around 1970 (on some stations later) when pronounced positive foE trends have appeared on most of the stations considered. The dependence of foE trends on geomagnetic activity can be related with nitric oxide variations at the Elayer heights. The positive foE trends that appeared after the “break down” effect may also be explained by the [NO] decrease which is not related to geomagnetic activity variations. But negative trends or irregular foE variations on some stations for the same time period require some different mechanism. Chemical pollution of the lower thermosphere due to the anthropogenic activity may be responsible for such abnormal foE behavior after the end of the 1960s.

Long-term trends in the ionospheric E and F1 regions

Ground based ionosonde measurements are the most essential source of information about long-term variations in the ionospheric E and F1 regions. Data of such observations have been derived at many different ionospheric stations all over the world some for more than 50 years. The standard parameters foE, h’E, and foF1 are used for trend analyses in this paper. Two main problems have to be consid...

An interpretation of the foF2 and hmF2 long-term trends in the framework of the geomagnetic control concept

Earlier revealed morphological features of the foF2 and hmF2 long-term trends are interpreted in the scope of the geomagnetic control concept based on the contemporary F2-layer storm mechanisms. The F2-layer parameter trends strongly depend on the long-term varying geomagnetic activity whose effects cannot be removed from the trends using conventional indices of geomagnetic activity. Therefore,...

Modeling the effects of secular variation of geomagnetic field orientation on the ionospheric long term trend over the past century

[1] A middleand low-latitude ionospheric theoretical model is used for the first time to assess the effects of the secular variations of geomagnetic field orientation on ionospheric long-term trends over the past century. It is found that the varied geomagnetic field can produce ionospheric long-term trends in both foF2 and hmF2. Since the amplitudes of geomagnetic field change depend on locati...

Long-term variations of the upper atmosphere parameters on Rome ionosonde observations and their interpretation

This is anOp Abstract – A recently proposed self-consistent approach to the analysis of thermospheric and ionospheric long-term trends has been applied to Rome ionosonde summer noontime observations for the (1957–2015) period. This approach includes: (i) a method to extract ionospheric parameter long-term variations; (ii) a method to retrieve from observed foF1 neutral composition (O, O2, N2), ...

The method of determination of the long-term trends in the F2 region independent of geomagnetic activity

A detailed analysis of the f oF2 data at the Sverdlovsk station is performed to answer the question: whether the long-term trends of the F2-layer parameter detected recently are mainly due to the long-term changes in geomagnetic activity during the recent decades. Two methods to derive trends independent of geomagnetic activity are developed. It is found that both methods agree well and give a ...
